Sun has released a trio of new X64-based server systems today.

The Sun Fire X4600 is the industry’s first 4U 16-way (up to 8 dual-core AMD Opteron 800-series processors) system. It holds up to 128GB of RAM, four hot-swappable 2.5″ SAS disks, and has four Gigabit Ethernet (copper) ports.

The Sun Fire X4500, code-name “Thumper”, is being called a “Hybrid Data Server”. It offers two (dual core) AMD Opteron 285 processors, 16GB of RAM, and up to 48 hot-pluggable 3.5″ SATA-II hard drives for a maximum of 24 terabytes of raw storage capacity. Network connectivity is provided via onboard quad Gigabit Ethernet ports or interfaces occupying one of two low-profile 64-bit PCI-X slots.

Sun is re-entering the blade server market with the Sun Blade 8000 Modular System. It can hold up to 20 eight-way Sun Blade X8400 server modules, each containing four dual-core AMD Opteron 800 series CPUs and up to 64GB RAM.

Correction: The Blade 8000 can hold up to 10 eight-way X8400 modules, and two Blade 8000s can fit in a rack, for up to 20 X8400 modules per rack.
