Well *I* have lots of basic problems with Windows, and I used to herd
them for a living.  That's OK, I'm recovered.  I work with proper things
now.  I'm not an ubergeek, but I wouldn't count not knowing mass-market
crap against him - and don't forget, his job involved lots and lots and
lots of hardware and software changes, which Windows is notoriously bad
at coping with.
