I'd honestly recommend just spending $100, and getting one of the
LinkSys BEFSR41 or 11 NAT router/gateways, or one of the SMC Barricade
products. Easier and quicker (and cheaper) to setup than dedicating a
"normal" computer to the task, and you dont have to worry about the
system getting hacked, HD dying, etc.
I bought a Linksys BEFSR11 about 3 months ago and hooked it between
my cablemodem and the 25-port switch that is the center of my home
network, and I've never been happier. I've got a 10-IP DHCP pool,
with the rest of a class C (private IP space, of course, since this
is all NAT) available for static IP allocations (SPARCs, etc).
It will also do about 6-8 megabits sustained lan<->wan.
