PITA?  ours has been the most painless hassle-free one we've
ever had.  Whats a pain about it?  Backwash it once a week or
once a month, put some more DE in on the water intake for the
pump in the pool.  Thats *it*.  Maybe your filter isnt big
enough for your pool?  ours is about 2x the size we need for
our pool (see http://images.sunhelp.org/house/tn/pool.jpg.html),
so its very low-maintenance.

*much* easier than having to hand-wash a filter cartridge, 
which is what we had before.
