I suspect that most children would find emacs (especially XEmacs in X11) to be
easier than vi.

And I rather happen to enjoy emacs.  Currently trying to write a simple URL 
manager in it.  I've already written some symbolic math stuff (which I'm now
rewritting since I accidently zapped the file before I could make a backup).
And I'm thinking of writing a personal finance manager in it (this probably
exists already though).
