I didn't know that Sony made decent cameras.

Personally, I'd go for a Mamiya 7, or perhaps a Leica M series (no need to be
particularly new or fancy).  Film and processing should be included with said
gift.

Of course, any camera better than a fixed focus, non-zoom, almost disposable 
35mm is unrealistic to hope for.
