You mean "around $200 for the GeForce card and drive", right?
Mac-specific PCI IDE cards are damn cheap on eBay, as long as you avoid
the ones with a Promise chipset - those go for 5x what the PC version
goes for on eBay.
Hell, I've got a ATA33 Acard unit here you can *have* if that's what
you're lookin' for :)

And you wouldn't need any special hacks to get OSX to run on it. And be
much faster. And parts are cheaper to get (they take the same PC100
memory that's so cheap these days :)
