it's all in what you prefer.

if you prefer a straight-up console client, you can rummage around and
find ircii/epic, bitchx, among a million others.

if you prefer a point and click interface, there are a million and one
choices available for various gui's.

2.8 is bloated enough without the additional pain of kde. that was my
general impression.

my guess is, the cluebies are loving it. as i rarely use anything other
than a console in solaris, i'm partial to wmaker when i regress back into
the land of mice and gui.
