How old are you talking about? Our house is ~50, and to get cat5
upstairs, I unhooked the phone jack in the bedroom, taped the cat5 to
the phone line, and went to the basement an YANKED,hard. It came down,
and I ran the phone line on  one of the unused pairs in the cat5. Might
be worth a try...
