OK.  Raw uncompressed audio is (* 44500 16 2)1,424kbit/sec. 

So, when we say 256kbit/sec, that is a ratio of (/ (* 44500 32) (* 256 1024)) 
1 to 5, assuming constant bitrate (MP3 also offers variable bit rate which
is supposed to give the same quality at a higher, but variable, compression
ratio).

By comparison, just gziping the wave file gives a ratio of 
(/ 11908220 9889542) 1 to 1.2.  I'm sure there are other lossless methods that
would yield even higher compression ratios.
