Perhaps because it's a nasty dirty job that has to be done.
War feels to me like disfiguring surgery for cancer. You wish there was a
better solution, but there isn't so you grit your teeth and get on with it,
accepting the losses that come with the goal. Oh yes, there's opportunity
for lives to improve because of it (the Afghans getting a better
government), and it's utterly needed to stop evil bastards like Al Quaeda,
but the process itself doesn't feel good.
I'm former Army, and whenever there's a war that I feel is needed, I always
feel uncomfortable for not being there, for not being part of it. It's not
that I have any illusions about it, and my individual contribution would be
insignificant (ain't that the way life always is). I just am always a
little uncomfortable when someone else is the one who's taking the risk and
the discomfort for military action that I am in favor of. I guess it's sort
of like the feeling that you have to shoot your own dog, you can't have
someone else do it.
