Recommendations, in order:
- Harris Tweed Blazer (looks good w/ slacks, and w/ jeans)
- lightweight Blue wool blazer
- Camel Hair Blazer
All of these are extremely versatile garments and will cover you for most
situations between casual and formal.
For FORMAL, find a tailor, but don't buy a suit until you NEED it. I have not
had mine on in 7-8 years.
In all cases, avoid fashion trends. If you do it right, one of these blazers
or a good suit will look good on you 10 years later.
Also, be aware that there are some functions/events where a suit is NOT
enough. A tux is a worthy investment, but only if you will have occasion to
wear it at least 2-3 times a year. For occasional tux wear, buy shoes and
tie/cummerbund/vest sets, but rent the rest.
As a final note, don't forget the local Salvation Army or other thrift store.
You cant beat the prices, and you will often find a much better coat than you
could otherwise afford hanging on the rack in there.
