That's exactly what I was aiming at, actually.  I picked out a Fender 
Squier Standard Strat as my first choice, gonna go look at it tomorrow 
in depth.  Also a 25-watt Fender amp.

Ya, agreed.  Luckily, I at least have some musical background.  I took 
music theory, played (a ways back) trombone, bass trombone, and piano.  
Wrote a couple o' songs, too.  (Only one was ever heard, one I wrote & 
sang for my sister's wedding.)

Ya.  I picked up the recommended (by the folks at the Guitar Center) 
DVD/learner's guide, and I plan on spending much time getting to know 
whatever I purchase.  Then, I'll hook it to the 4-track in the guest 
room. :-)
