At this point my backup policy is ghost onto the machine that has 100 gigs
free space once a week and cpio + cp onto smb mounted shares my /etc and
/home and other crucial viles.

That's not the greatest policy, but I cant afford a DLT, or really any
backup medium that could store what's on my systems. Hard drive space is SO
much cheaper than tape space now is there really any point o tapes other
than portability?
