What about firewire based file transfer? 400Mbps aint half bad, and
realworld throughput (from a laptop anyway) is prolly the same as you'll
get with GigE plus they are easily available and not very expensive.

i do a lot of transferring large file back and forth to and
from the laptop.  I'm not hoping to reach any where near
gigabit speeds but anything faster than 100baseT would be
nice.
