I speak based on my experience in the industry, both as an employee of
various computer companies, as well as a purchaser of a wide variety of
equipment over the years. It has been my experience from both sides
that hardware companies suffer considerably at the hands of independent
vendors. I can think of a half dozen incidents at my current employer
that were caused by outside vendors making amazing errors.

I'm not claiming that any computer manufacturer has a squeaky-clean
record. (ecache, anyone?), but I now have some interesting perspective
on the process.

However, I rise to Apple's defense because they have had an excellent
track record for processing recalls, and I believe that accusing them of
a conspiracy is wrong. BTW, we also had a powerbook 5300, and it never
burst into flames either.
