Grandfathered basically means that if a building was built before a code
was enacted, the owners have zero obligation to bring it up to current
code. Usually it occurs with building codes and *not* fire codes.

As is, what with the wiring issues you mentioned..I'd seriously
consider moving. There are some serious risks to shared vent systems in
kitchens, obviously. We're talking grease buildup in the ducts (and
grease attracts and holds smoke odors and bacteria, mold, etc).
