[geeks] GPS

Now that I found a laptop (Thinkpad 770), I am looking for a GPS receiver to
hook up to it. I would prefer one that has various cables (serial to laptop,
cable for my visor). I don't necessarily _need_ a fancy mapping program to
go with it, I just want to be able to poll the receiver every x minutes and
get coordinates back. The important thing is I want to be able to write my
own applications for it, so I need some kind of specs on how it works (I
would rather not reverse engineer it). I also want to be able to talk to it
in Windows/Linux/OpenBSD.

The one that I have been looking at is....

Has fancy software that is pretty useless to me (I am Canadian).
Looks like it has different cables
Looks like it's preferred method of connection to a PC is USB. I don't know
if that is bad (may complicate coding).
I haven't found any mention of interface specifications.
Other than that, it looks ideal.

Anyone have any recommendations?
