The biography was wrong then. After being discharged from the army, he
worked on the New English Dictionary from 1918 to 1920; was a lecturer
and later professor of English Language at Leeds from 1920 to 25;
professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford from 25 to 45; and finally professor
of English Language and Literature from 45 to 59, when he retired.
