Well, what you describe sound like Vermont and New Hampshire.
Then, there's always the east-of-the-middle of the country where I landed.
Ohio is a pretty nice area - plenty of open space, slower pace of life,
excellent hunting, and a fairly libertarian attitude (except for the
governor who bends to the will of the police unions and corporate interests
instead of the populace, but you get that everywhere). RealEstate is also
inexpensive in quantity, especially when you get outside of city and town
centers.
Headed West from here, you might want to skip right over Illinois. Chigago
Mayor Daley has gotten a superiority complex and seems to be trying to run
the state from his office in Chicago (IMO).
I've always loved the Big Sky country (Wyoming, Montana, etc) but,
historically, there's not very many high-tech job opportunities there.
Which may not bother you if that's not waht you're looking for now.
The mid-Atlantic states are nice to visit, but I've never looked at them as
a place for employment. Lots of auto racing down there, which can do
wonders for your mind and soul (as far as relaxing you after a hard week at
the office). They also seem to be fairly libertarian, but not anywhere near
as much as NH and VT.
You might want to stay away form the left coast - IMO that whole region is
in a downward spiral.
