In the Postscript version I days, you'd draw a bunch of lines,
slowly changing the colour. Painfull, and device specific - 
obviously you're choosing the step & line thickness for a 
particular output device resolution.

I think Postscript version II added some gradient stuff, but I've 
never used it.
