[geeks] Quick backup solution

I have created a directory on my FreeBSD fileserver and want to back up 
an entire Gentoo Linux hard disk (the laptop).  I've been told gnutar 
is advanced enough to do this, but I am wondering if that will cause 
issues over NFS.  I am using 3.0 so it is tcp.  Is rsync a better 
choice?  I'd love to have some compression too (after the backup is 
taken is fine).  Thoughts?

This is of course xfs and ext3 for /boot
