[geeks] Recommendations...for TP 240

My workmate installed Solaris 8 x86 in a VMware partition on his Thinkpad.
He's pretty happy thus far ... last week he found it needfull to putty from
the 2000 desktop to the server, then SSH from the server back to the
instance of Solaris x86 in VMWare for some files ... looked a bit odd, but
it worked.

I just got a Thinkpad 240 to f around with and I'm wondering... what should
I install of these choices?

Linux (Gentoo - thinking about trying this)
xBSD (Which?...)
Solaris 8 x86 (don't have 9)...

Considerations: Flaky external PCMCIA IBM CD-ROM
                        3Com 3CCFE574BT LAN card
                        Need to emulate Windows...either VMWare or WINE will
do.
