If you plan on doing more than one IRIX install a month, you really
want an IRIX net-install server. The net-install server needs rexec,
rlogin, rsh, and tftp open. You can install your overlays, foundation
1, foundation 2, and NFS volumes from the miniroot over the network.
Then you can reboot and install everything else over NFS.
You want to install as little as possible in the miniroot over the
network because the rexec-based installation is -so- much slower than
nfs. I think a full install (IRIX + overlays + MIPSpro + ProDev +
patches + IRIX Applications) took about 14 hours on my Octane (over
fast Ethernet!) the last time that I did the entire installation from
the miniroot.
By comparison, installing the basics in the miniroot and everything else
via nfs is between 2 and 3 hours, I think.
