This is being spoken by someone who is 6'0" tall and 275#, so take it as
you may...
I think that the airlines especially, and most of corporate America
partially, are unaware/unwilling/unable to adjust to the fact to the
average person is considerably taller and wider then he/she was in 1900.
I hear the oft-stated statistic that the average male is 5'10" and 175#,
and the average female 5'3" and 115#. I seriously doubt that this is
the case nowadays.
Due to genetic selection (women seem to like tall guys!) the human race
is getting taller. Due to more sedentary lives (most jobs just don't
involve daily manual labor anymore!) the human race is getting wider.
We (or doctors/gov't, etc.) can prognosticate all we want about the
problems with this, but we _do_ have to realize that it is a fait accompli.
Airlines, trains, cars, clothes, et. al. need to be sized to actual
people and not statistics. If we, as Americans, stand together, we
_can_ force a change.
