I've never needed more than than 20, never actually use less than 100 on
gentoo.  I can see times when I might need to put some recovery tools in
there.

since gentoo runs with /boot unmounted, journalling is sort of a moot
deal. I go ahead and run ext3 just becasue it is becoming the default
$everything linux partition.
