You're right.  I don't know offhand of an easy way to rebuild -all- the
ports.  You can, of course, fetch a new copy of the ports tree via the
usual 'cvs update -P'.

Precisely.  You can get a useful BSD install from the CD in well under
100MB.  In fact, the last full install (I can't remember if I installed
X11 or not) I did was well under 500MB.  The downside to this is that
programs that aren't part of the OS tend to lag quite a bit more between
updates.  However, the system itself stays -very- current, especially
with regards to security updates.
