While I agree about Linux's origins don't forget that FreeBSD & NetBSD 
(and I would also assume OpenBSD) basically started around the same 
time with the same hardware. The original BSD for x86 was 386BSD which 
was around at the same time as v0.99 of yggdrasil linux, I know, 
because I have CDROMs of both :) The Yggdrasil cdrom has the list of 
specific hardware supported printed right on the cd, one of these days 
I might try and put together a matching system so I can install it just 
for the heck of it.

Last year I actually installed 386BSD on an old 486 laptop I had laying 
around here.
