If it hit the chemical tank, it probably would not have had an odor after
being cleaned.  I know of a case where a 2 meter HT went into a Port-o-John
tank, was retrieved by the antenna (only part not submerged) and immediately
washed off (and out) and dried.  Not only does it still work, there is NO 
odor to it.  As far as #2 and #3 in your question list....depends on how
much you want it back and I think they should be responsible for repairs.
