I sincerely hope this trend goes out the door soon (although it
will probably be replaced with some thing even more ignorant.) In
my neck of the woods i see old Cutlasses, Regals, Glass Houses
and other misc 70's and 80's era Caddies driving down the street
on 20" to 24" wheels. Makes them look like a f**king Conestoga
wagon sitting about a foot and a half off of the ground.
What most of the re-res don't understand is the huge list
of downsides:
1. your speedo is now way off
2. your gear ratio is bumped up which usually results in
eaten rear tires (assuming RWD.)
3. your tranny is overheating and will soon die
4. your braking distance is SIGNIFICANTLY increased
5. brake components are eaten up in short order
6. can you say under-steer ????
7. every pound of increased rotational weight is roughly
equivalent to 5 to 7 lbs. of "normal" increased weight, so your
fuel mileage is going down.
8. drive shafts get twisted and brake
9. the list goes on.....
The real beauty is that these people are spending $5k and up to
do all this damage to a car worth about $2k. Once again, i'm not
speaking of Escalades and Navigators here. They suffer from many
of the aforementioned symptoms but usually to a lesser extent due
to size and weight change not being as significant as it is on an
old 79 Eldorado.
