Made of plastic but VERY effective: the Dyson vacuum.  HEPA filter.
All the junk goes into a clear (so you can see the stuff in case you
vacuum up something you want to keep) canister you empty, so no bags.
NO burnt smell.  

You would not believe the crap it picks up out of what looks like a
clean carpet, including a very fine dust that looks like cement dust.
