I found some stuff in some PM issues I had, and I also found an
interesting connection to Science Fiction... I'll just say "Hugo".

Definitely. That'll be my next step. I'll be going to the library to
read about Dr. Pickard's experimentations with various materials.
Apparently he tested thousands of materials to come up with what we
know as the "crystal" detector.
