What do you do for a spinner knob?  I've played Tempest under MAME
emulation and I've played Tempest under the MAME emulator core with the
I/O layers ripped off and my own hackery slapped on so as to get a real
rotating knob for the spinner, and I consider it borderline unplayable
with the MAME turn-left/turn-right button scheme.  You need to be able
to *both* turn through large angles fast and do small adjustments, and
that's incompatible with buttons.  (Unless, I suppose, you had two
pairs of buttons, one for coarse and one for fine...I should try that,
though I suspect I'd still rather have a real knob.)
