You mean when used as hardware RAID, or any use of the controller at
all?

That would not be good news at all.

The whole point of RAID is to handle flaky drives.

Well, noisy is relative.

I have a Sun SS5 that I think is quite loud, partly because the IBM
Ultrastar drives in it are singing.

For reasons I can't figure out, Sun U2's always seem quieter.

I think part of the reason is in the nature of the noise.  My SS5 makes
a lot of higher pitched noises that drive me crazy.  Also, the SCSI
drives in it are singing, which makes it even worse. [*]

My desktop PC has what some people call loud fans.  However, the noise
they make is just a whir, and that doesn't bother me much at all.  It
doesn't sound irritating to me like the other noises.

I'd love to get something newer, but I can't really afford it.

If I can't get something decent cheaply, I will have to just put
everything on a Sun U2.

	That's why I was asking in another post about what SCSI drives are
	nice and quiet.  Every SCSI drive I've owned eventually develops a
	singing noise that drives me nuts.  IBM Ultrastar and Seagate Hawk
	and Barracuda especially.  So far my Fujitsus are pretty quiet, but
	I can't find good deals on them.
