And the massive waves of traffic we got during the last big virus
epidemics? Nimda and MyDoom and CodeRed consumed an immense amount of
bandwidth. Nimda nearly shut down two or three POPs at the ISP I
managed at that time until we started blocking customers with infected
PCs and mailing them virus-removal CDs.

Certainly not!

Over half of all email sent comes from botnets.

Proprietary extensions to HTML to support editing in Office and better
presentation in their browser interfere with everyone else trying to
view that content and bloat[0] the end result.

Virus-generated traffic plus all the traffic involved in distributing
their software updates to fix vulnerabilities every other week plus all
the traffic involved in distributing updated malware/virus/worm/spyware
definitions nearly every day.

It's all Joe Sixpack's fault for not being an IT wizard when the
colorful box and adverts claim he'll be able to move mountains without
having to understand how any of this "geeky stuff" works.

[0] Look at an Excel-generated or Word-generated HTML file sometime.
The amount of superfluous crap is staggering.
