$$$, they get a better deal for chipset y than they had for chipset x
previously.
To make things even worse, they change the chipsets they use on a
quasi-regular basis and "neglect" to change the model number or SKU to
reflect the change. A wireless card could be the best ever one month,
and another "identical" card bought a month later could be a steaming
pile of crap.
Like I said before, the only wireless PCI cards worth a damn are Cisco -
AIR-PCI342 or AIR-PCI352.
