I think it's more a case of "A caching proxy isn't appropriate for a
single user". Your web browser cache is doing squid's job before squid
can do it.
Up to about a year ago I was using squid caching for a local school, and
IIRC they were seeing a whole-month average hit rate of about 40%, some
days would be as much as 60%. They would have up to 40 people browsing
the 'net at one time.
