Is that the teachers' actual average _salary_, or is that the entire payroll
cost, including non-salary things like the employer's part of Social
Security and Medicare taxes, unemployment insurance, health insurance, and
other "costs of employment?"
I don't know what teachers get paid here, but I do know that one of the
touchstones of every local "affordable housing" plan is to make it possible
for teachers, police officers, firefighters, and other municipal employees
to live on the island. Median house prices are something over $600k, so you
can see the problem.
In my youth, my goal was to be an English professor. I rather imagined
myself in the tweed jacket with the leather elbow patches and the loose pipe
tobacco in the pocket. Or I did until I found out that my part-time job at
the U's hospital earned more for me than my English instructor's teaching
Eng-105 did for him.
