my uncle gave practice up after a patient sued him.  he won; it was
for an experimental procedure she'd begged him to perform, but it cost
him a lot emotionally and his malpractice rates went to something like
$3M/y.

lawsuits aside, doctors and the hospitals where they work should be
accountable for their work.  hospitals should not be able to cover up
bad mistakes and bad doctors simply because they think it reflects
poorly on their image and reputation.  mistakes cannot be learned from
if they are not shared, and bad doctors cannot be turned out if their
records are not exposed.
