Sort of. Since there is no central authority, there is a range of
practices which range from "come as you are" to sects that make
the Amish look like party animals.

That's a relatively recent thing. The Society of Jesus was founded as 
the Pope's army, and until the 1960's pretty much stuck very strongly
to the official line. I remember attending an inforral lecture by
a Jesuit in the late 1970's where he commented that "At one time we
were considered the Pope's commandos and now we are considered 
the VietCong."
