I can't speak about the gtk2 version, but v.1.0.5 (last gtk1 version) is extremely fast. Point in fact, it's the fastest GUI based MUA i've used to date.
On most of my machines it can be started in well under a second. The whole app takes less than 20 megs on my linux box here at work.
