i read of a tivo hacker who put in a pair of 500g drives when they
became available mostly just to see if it could be done, but he said
it also changed his recording/viewing habits.  with some 1100h of
video capacity, he records anything and everything he might ever
possibly want to watch, and doesn't worry about getting to it all -
but there's always something on whenever he feels like it.
