Things might have worked better - but are you talking about the era when
you didn't own your own phone, couldn't attach anything to the phone
network without permission from the telco and Lily Tomlin's Ernestine
character said "We don't care, we don't have to. We're the phone company."
I'll take what we've got now.
Note, I didn't start working in IT until 1989, so I've never experienced
a pre-breakup telco environment. I might be missing something.
