I'd agree with you, for example, Yamaha MotoGP use a reverse-cranking  
4-cylinder in-line engine in their racing motorcycle (the YZR-M1, as  
ridden by Valentino Rossi, Colin Edwards and others). They use an  
intermediate shaft that acts as a balancer shaft to counteract the  
irregular firing of the engine, but ALSO, critically to this case, it  
sits between the crank and the gearbox drive to produce *forward* drive.
