I suspect (but do not know) that the reason IDE drivers are included is that they are smaller than SCSI drivers, and there are multiple choices of SCSI controllers to emulate (everyone has IDE, so why not go with that?) Oh wait, VMware Player doesn't support IDE, nor does Fusion, IIRC...
