I've had good experiences with State Farm, Allstate and Kemper at 
various times over the years.  None of those companies have the lowest 
rates, but it seems to be worth it to me to not get screwed with.  And 
it's not *that* much more money, in the grand scheme of things.

I think a significant contribution to why I never get screwed is that I 
get to know my local insurance agent and he helps me deal with the 
company.  And I *never* deal with insurance brokers.
