this is ethernet spec.  the mac represents the -system-, not the
-port-.  ip differentiates the ports, unless you're trunking.

confusion happened when peecees got ethernet cards, as they have no
substructure to coordinate setting a system-wide mac, so each card got
its own and people began to expect that each card/port -should- have
its own.
