Quoth Shannon Hendrix ...

... and what' _really_ funny about that combination is that Chrysler owned
Rootes Group at the time; Sunbeam was Rootes's "sporty" brand.

This came about because the Tiger, known as the Alpine in its normal
4-banger incarnation, had, as you might imagine, a rather small engine
compartment, and the smallest Chrysler V-8 of the day was too big to fit.
Ford's small V-8, the 260 just barely made it, although maintenance access
was a nightmare.

Bottom line? Chrysler bought Ford engines in the USA, shipped 'em to
England, put them in cars built by their subsidiary, then shipped the cars
to the USA.

If you've never driven a Tiger ... it's actually rather a pig. Nose heavy,
and not all that fast. The solid rear axle meant it was capable of spinning
the right rear wheel from now until forever, but not so good at getting that
power to the road. OK in left-hand bends, not so good in right-handers.
Cute, though.
