That's because we have socialized medicine and you can buy all the
nutritional suppliments they say you need at a discount from your HMO.

If she wants something that's covered here in a form they don't cover it, it's 
a considered a luxury item and taxed as such. :-(

At one time you could buy extra insurance from one of the HMO's that
covered any drug sold in the U.S. it was about $15 a month for a family.
Since the other HMO's did not cover it, they made it illegal. Their rational
was that 20% of the population could not afford the extra money so it was
not fair. 

I could not understand it, it would have been cheaper in the long run to 
have the state pay the extra $15 a month for 20% of the population than have
100% of the people that need drugs not covered here run up big bills for
alternative treatment.
