From what I gather that's because the boot rom only accepts certain
types of binaries to boot. The link to Ubuntu on Qube 3 mentions a
rom file and a rom updater so if someone had the will they could very
likely re-write from scratch to boot NetBSD or maybe even OpenBSD on
the machine.
